Creating a virtual machine with Microsoft Virtual PC (lab1)

One important thing to mention with this lab build out is that we need to use existing resources, and not spend a dime in the process.

  1.  Host for Server OS's: Microsoft Virtual PC
  2. Screen capture of our setup prior to any configuration. Nothing much going on yet, just an unused Windows XP SP3 Virtual Machine that we will use later
    • Windows 7 Virtual Machines
  3. Now we are going to start configuring our Server 2008 Virtual Machine
  4. From within the Windows Virtual PC console click on the the Create Virtual Machine button.
    • Simply name the host whatever you want ( we have named ours XenApp001) and then browse to the location where you want to store the relevant files. (the default will be somewhere in your local profile)
    • xenapp virtual server
    • after you are complete click on "Next"
  5. Next step is to set your memory (RAM) and network information.
    • its important to note memory and networking settings can be changed at anytime.
    • we want the build to go as smoothly and as fast as we can so lets bump up the memory to 3GB (3000MB) and keep the default "use computer network connections" checked.
    • Note: you cant add more memory than your system has, or you will receive a friendly prompt reminding your memory cannot be greater than X.
    • virtual machine settings
    • After you are complete and ready for the next step, click on Next.
  6.  Next step is to configure how you want to allocate your disk. You have several options.
    • The goal was to keep this simple, so we are going to accept the default and allow for a dynamically expanding virtual hard disk. If you are looking for speed and have some type of fiber channel connection to a NAS or SAN device where you will be hosting your virtual machines, here is where you would configure that information.
    • virtual hard disk settings
    •  When you are ready, go ahead and click on create to complete first phase of the installation.
  7. Here is an overview of your newly created virtual machine.
