Windows Virtual PC Integration Components

Installing Windows Virtual PC Integration Components: So you have just finished up on your new server install on via a virtual pc on your brand spanking new windows 7 64bit OS (like us) and you happen to notice some super annoying mouse activity when you set screen focus by clicking within the Windows virtual PC. Have no worries, follow the following instructions on how to install the Integration Components for Windows Virtual PC.

  1. Virtual pc can be a nice clean install, or a dirty junked up configuration you have had laying around for some time.

  2. Next click on the "tools" drop down and select "Install Integration Components" 
  3. At the following prompt, click on "continue" to proceed with the install.

    • If you have seen this message several times and you would like to not see it again, simply click on the box to the left of "Don't show this message again" prompt prior to clicking on "Continue" and you will never see this prompt again.
  4. Now login if you have not already done so
    • To login, click on "Ctrk+Alt+Del"
    • Now click within the Virtual PC with your mouse and enter your username, and password
    • If needed, click the "tools" drop down and select "install integration components" one more time.
  5. You should now see the following prompt
    • install setup.exe from vpcintgcomp dvd drive
    • Click on "run setup.exe"
    • if this prompt is annoying and you don't want windows to remind you about this prompt, then place a check mark to the left of "Always do this for software and games"
  6. if you happen to see the very well familiar msiexec.exe prompt than you should pat yourself on the back and think "almost done!"

    • don't click on cancel, unless you absolutely need to
  7. Now here is your chance to make a difference pay attention to the supported operating systems:
    • windows xp sp3
    • windows vista sp1
    • windows 7
    • if the OS your virtual pc is hosted on falls into the above three requirements than bang, hit next!

    • click on next to proceed and watch msiexec.exe do its job. this is fun huh?
  8. depending on the memory and processor allocations for your virtual pc, this should take no time at all to complete
    •  barring no error messages, you should see the "setup completed" prompt, click on "finish to exit
    • you should also see the neat little prompt indicating "your devices are ready to use" if you happen to be installing the integration components on a Server 2008 virtual pc like us.
  9. I'm sure you have been wondering: "when is this darn thing going to ask me to reboot"...
    • we are proud to say here is your opportunity, take control and allow your virtual pc (or server) to reboot
    • do it, click on "yes" and bounce it
      • wait.... hopefully this is a production instance where you have active users. If it is. please kindly send your friends a quick note via tsadmin.exe and allow the users some time to gracefully log off.
