Loading Server 2008 to Microsoft Virtual PC (lab 2)

 Now that you are comfortable with creating your virtual machine in Microsoft Virtual PC for windows 7. Lets load up a thin version of Microsoft Server 2008 using our Citrix XenApp001 virtual machine.

  1. At this point, we are going to assume you have already downloaded an evaluation version of Windows Enterprise Server 2008 or have already burned the iso to a disk or have it stored locally or on flash media.
  2. If not, perhaps you have downloaded the Virtual Machine Hard Drive Image (.vhd) for Microsoft windows Enterprise Server 2008. Either of the above should work fine.

    • Right click your mouse on XenApp001 and select "settings"
  3. To attach your ISO image to your newly created Virtual Machine click on "DVD Drive". Now navigate to your image by clicking browse and then click on ok after you have selected your image.
    • if your image is on a dvd, click on "access a physical drive" then click on the down arrow and select your dvd drive letter.
    • mount vm to iso
    • click on OK to continue
  4. Now we are ready to fire up your new virtual machine. At the main screen, double click on XenApp001 or right click and select "open" with your mouse.
  5. if everything worked as anticipated, you should see your virtual machine fire up, immediately consume the allocated memory and prompt you to start the configuration

    • Time and currency format: English (united states)
    • Keyboard or input method: US
    • click on next
  6. We are now ready to start loading the OS to the Virtual Machine.
    • install now screen capture
    • click back in the Virtual machine with your mouse and select "Install Now"
  7. In the next screen, you will be asked what install you want to proceed with.
    • windows server 2008 enterprise, full installation
    • For this VM, we are going to select Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (full installation)
    • click on next
    • be sure to read the license terms,  select "i accept the license terms" if you agree
    • click on next
  8. on the next prompt, you will be asked what type of installation you want. since we are not upgrading an existing OS, our only option is a custom install.
    • select custom install option
    • select the custom (advanced) option
    • you will then be asked where to install.
    • select disk 0 unallocated space (should be default) and select next.
  9. sit back and relax. your OS will now install itself.
    • depending on the resources you have allocated to this server install, you may have to wait for a wile for the installation to complete.
    • relax, server os is installing
    • Now you are done! Set your new password for the "Administrator" account to something you can remember.
